Alex Burger is Executive Chef at The Amsterdam in Rhinebeck, where he brings a multitude of experience cooking in Michelin starred restaurants around the world and in legendary Chef Daniel Boulud’s New York City restaurants. Joining The Amsterdam – one of the Hudson Valley’s most exciting new restaurants – was a chance for Alex to bring his unique perspective to a burgeoning culinary scene, to be close to the superb purveyors and farmers of the region, and to cook soulful, elevated farm-to-table fare.
Prior to The Amsterdam Alex was Executive Chef at Bar Boulud in New York City – Boulud’s beloved French bistro serving seasonal French fare and an extensive menu of traditional terrines and pâtés – where he led the kitchen for two years. His time with the Boulud group also included stints as Executive Sous Chef at db Bistro Moderne, Banquet and Sous at the iconic DANIEL, and head chef of Boulud’s Feast & Fetes catering company. In his early twenties he traveled the world working with Michelin-starred Spanish chef Eneko Atxa, at his Basque country restaurant Azurmendi, and then running Aziamendi in Phuket, Thailand within the luxurious Iniala Hotel. Following its blockbuster success, Atxa asked Alex to oversee nomadic, gastronomic pop-ups in London, Malta, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and Singapore. Alex has also cooked in some of Europe's most renowned kitchens, including L’Auberge de la Feniere in Provence under Chef Reine Sammut and with Alex Aitken at Le Poussin at Whitely Ridge in the UK.
Alex now calls Rhinebeck, NY home, where he lives with his wife – who hails from Cannes, France – and their son, Brooklyn. They love to cook at home for family and friends, and are thrilled to no longer have a Manhattan-sized kitchen.
